Author's Note: What goes throught the mind of a young woman who, due to extreme economical problems, has sold herself into slavery and now awaits the beginning of her new life? Compounding the stress is the fact that her decision is not final until a prescribed waiting period has been completed. April signed the agreement; she put the pen on the desk and slowly stood up. She then watched as the woman seated on the other side of the desk turned the papers around and carefully flipped through the pages insuring that each of the required places for initials had been properly marked and that April’s signature was properly placed and dated. Seemingly satisfied she placed the paperwork into a file the tab of which showed April’s full name and the date of April 2, 2012, her date of birth, eighteen years ago today. Author's Note: This is a story of betrayal, enslavement, hope and desperation. It is actually the first in a series of stories involving a young woman who after being cheated of her inheritance by a conniving guardian is sold into slavery. For Esme the coach ride had been thrilling. It was three days in a public coach to Bacau. But for the last six years Esme had not been in a coach at all. She had not been in a city. She had not been out in the world, so she had not had contact with young men. As the coach bumped lurched and shook over what passed as a highway, Esme flirted, and engage the young cavalry Captain sitting across from her in conversation. ...

Author's Note: A great Halloween costume is a wonderful thing, but sometimes it is better to pick your own and not trust someone else. “One game of backgammon, if you win I will give you $10,000. If I win you will come to the Halloween party dressed as a pony, but in a costume that I will provide.” Sounds simple, sounds none threatening. For David $10,000 was nothing. For her it was huge, with the costs of school she was really struggling. Was this just his way of helping her out? And so what if she lost. It wasn’t that it was filled with disasters, she wasn’t’ about to spend the rest of her life in prison, she did not have a fatal disease that would kill her in the next six months, she wasn’t pregnant. That was just it, she just wasn’t! ...

Author's Note: I did not set out to write a novella. I knew where the story ended but I let the characters pick the path that led there. In the process I have become very fond of these characters. I hope you enjoy them as well. Jennifer met the end of the semester with mixed emotions. She had enjoyed her first year of college, being away from home and living in the dorms had been great. She also enjoyed school. She had been disciplined, worked hard and maintained her grades. That didn’t mean she had not had fun. After all, college was not supposed to be all work. She had been lucky as well with her roommate. They had gotten along well from the moment they met. Abigail Johnson, Abby to her friends, which included Jen, was also a freshman, but a lot more outgoing than Jennifer. Jen did not consider herself to be shy, but this was the first time she had lived away from home. It was the first time that she did not have to check in with someone and get permission for the things that she did. That gave her a feeling of freedom, but it came with a twinge of guilt whenever she stepped outside what had been deemed to be the expected boundaries. ...
